Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham H. Maslow developed hierarchy of needs theory in the year 1954. Maslow's hierarchy explains human behavior in terms of basic requirements for survival and growth. These needs are arranged according to their power to motivate the individual. According to this theory, needs pyramid is divided into basic (or deficiency) needs (e.g. physiological, safety, love, and esteem) and growth needs (cognitive, aesthetics and self-actualisation). One must satisfy lower level basic needs before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs. Once these needs have been reasonably satisfied, one may be able to reach the highest level called self-actualisation.

The hierarchy of needs includes
  • Physiological needs

  • Safety needs

  • Love and Belongingness needs

  • Esteem needs

  • Self-Actualisation needs

  • Physiological Needs

    These needs are required to sustain life. Eg.

  • Air

  • Water

  • Love

  • Sleep

  • Sex

  • When these needs are not satisfied people feel irritated, pain, discomfort, etc. These feelings motivate us to alleviate them as soon as possible. Once these needs are satisfied then people think of any other needs.

    Safety Needs

    These needs are physiological in nature and deal with safety and consistency in this volatile world. People turn their attention to safety and security in order to be free from the threat of physical and emotional harm. These needs are fulfilled by,

  • Job security

  • Staying in safer area

  • Good amount in bank

  • Good health

  • Once these needs are achieved people starts looking for next higher needs.

    Love and Belongingness Needs

    Next step is for love and belongingness where people want to be part of some group. They want to be accepted by others.

  • Need for friends

  • Need for belongingness

  • Need for society

  • are basically needed at this stage.

    Self-Esteem Needs

    Self-esteem is those needs where people want to get respected as well as get some social status and recognition.

    Due to competence nature or mastery in task people get respect and attention. This is similar to the nature of belongingness. But social status and recognition is the demonstration of power.

    Some Esteem needs are,

  • Self-respect

  • Achievement

  • Attention

  • Recognition

  • Reputation

  • Self-Actualization Needs

    This is the quest of reaching one's full potential as a person. This need arises when all the needs in a person life is fulfilled and finally tries to reach the peak of wisdom and truth. This is the most energized moments of profound happiness and harmony where person is out of this materialistic world and find peace in mind in devotion of god.

    Here person try to seek truth, justice, knowledge and wisdom.
