Work Ethics for children

Children at very young age are very curious to learn something new. They generally repeat the activities done by their parents. Curiosity get them involved in watering the plants and cleaning the car along with their father, keep dishes in kitchen as they see their mother doing. These kinds of activities help kids to develop physically as well as mentally. On the other hand there are some kids who do not get the opportunity to contribute or do things which will make them feel valuable. Parents are advised to provide an opportunity to their kids to do some small task in home. Parents should:

  • Make work a fun activity: Parents need to guide children how work contributes to the family's well-being. Prepare to-do list on daily basis and assign some household jobs to the children. Set timeframe to complete the task. Reward kids with chocolates, cartoon movies or outing in their favorite park if they complete it on time. Rewarding mechanism will help the child to put extra effort and they will take interest in completing the task. Meanwhile parent should always observe their kids' activities.

  • Make children learn from failure: There are possibilities that children will not able to complete the tasks which were assigned to them. If the child fails to keep their fun book in proper place, let them search for it when they need it again. Failure to search and the anxiety created during search operation will provide them a lesson not to repeat this kind of mistake again. They will learn that their actions have consequences and if they don't perform properly then there is a penalty for it. Parents need to explain their kids about their mistakes and the consequences.

  • Talk about why to work: As children get older, it's important for parents to discuss the meaning and purpose of work. This is the time to make it clear that jobs create value, make products, or serve people. A young person needs to learn that there is a purpose to all of this - that doing a job well makes you a better person and enhances character and self-esteem. One way parents can start this discussion with their kids is by sharing their own work experiences, good and bad, and talk about the lessons they learned and how they were shaped by those experiences.

  • Teach children to keep endurance level high: It is possible that children may not like someone else touching their toys. Irritation, feeling of anger and jealousy develop in early age if not checked. They react instantly if scolded for wrong doing. They learn to complain about everything if it does not happen according to their way. Parents are advised to make their kids to come up above all this. Children should have a patience level to tolerate small things. Mechanism to handle anger, jealousy and ego should be taught at the early age.

At early age, children do not know the difference between good and bad work habits. They try to put hand in everything. Parents need to guide them with the differences. Make the kids acquainted with the benefits of cultivating the habits of doing good work. Monitoring their kids work regularly will show them the right direction. In long run kids will have a balanced life and will also know the value of family. Lesson to handle small task in early age will build them mentally to take bigger responsibility at later point of time. Children will become good citizens of their country when they get good start from their parent at the early age.
